KUESTER MANAGEMENT GROUP REVEALS SECRETS OF RECRUITING HOA BOARD MEMBERS

Kuester Management Group shares some tips for enlisting volunteers for HOA Board service.

For any HOA or condo association to flourish, it needs to have a team of dedicated, passionate volunteers—Board members from within the community who are invested in seeing the community prosper and grow. Important though Board service may be, many Boards face an uphill battle in enlisting new volunteers. In a new statement to the press, Kuester Management Group shares some insights into getting community members interested in serving on the Board.

"Approaching someone about serving on the Board is always a little daunting, because it's easy to imagine what their objections will be," comments Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. "Often, community members will tell you that they just don't have time for Board service. It's best to address this head-on, offering them a realistic assessment of the time involved with Board service: Yes, it will require some time commitment, but maybe not as much as people fear."

Another reason why HOA Board volunteers are hard to come by is that many community members will simply feel ill-equipped to deal with the complexities of an HOA community. "Your Board should be offering plenty of educational resources and opportunities—and making these resources and opportunities easily accessible to new Board members," comments Kuester. "You should be letting them know that they're not just going to be thrown into the deep end."

Appreciating the work of the Board is also key. "Make sure you inform potential Board members of some of the accomplishments of the Board, making it clear that, yes, you really do get things done and make a difference in the community!" says Kuester.

A final tip from Bryan Kuester is to make it clear to community members the consequences of not having enough Board volunteers. "If a quorum cannot be reached, then the association cannot really be operated," he says. "As such, control of the community may be awarded to a judge—someone who doesn't have a vested interest in the community's wellbeing."

Ultimately, Kuester says the important thing is to be diligent in expressing the valued role that Board volunteers play—and the many ways in which the community and the management company support them.
