NEW STUDIES ANALYZE THE SCIENCE OF WEIGHT LOSS

Experts claim personalized approach to be most effective

In a study released in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) last week, a detailed analysis of the results of popular diets since 1966 found the differences among all diets (such as Atkins, Weight Watchers, The Zone, etc.) to be minimal. In another study released last week, in theAnnals of Internal Medicine, the effectiveness of a low-carbohydrate diet versus a low-fat diet revealed the low-carb approach to be marginally more effective, with an average 7 pounds more in weight loss after one year.

These studies have sparked commentary from health experts across the country, including Harlan Krumhol, cardiologist and Professor of Medicine at Yale University, claiming that a personalized approach is the only truly effective method for weight loss. "The diet industry generates billions of dollars annually, but it is built on razor-thin evidence about what is best for any individual. And it is likely that one size doesn't fit all. A diet that is best for one person may not be so for another. Ultimately, our recommendations need to be personalized," said Krumhol in a recent article on NPR.

A pioneer in the personalized weight loss approach, new to the market in June, is online health platform ph360.me. ph360.me provides a personalized guide to food, fitness, environment, and lifestyle for optimal weight loss and overall wellness. It takes into account scientific calculations of each user's gene expression and their individual biomarkers for personalized weight loss. Matt Riemann, Founder and CEO of ph360.me, said "early users of ph360.me tell us that one of the first things they notice is that they have more energy, feel more positive and confident, and have less problems with digestion, headaches, and sleep issues. That is because the suggestions in ph360 are designed to balance hormones, which affect many aspects of our health. The other impact we've seen is that people who have been struggling for a long time to lose weight are losing weight quickly and easily by following their ph360 plan. We're regularly seeing weight loss of 10-20 pounds per week."

Ph360.me has trialed its weight loss platform with more than 1,000 users since June, after a decade of research and input from 10,000 patients went into its development. "Any diet such as Paleo or Atkins that recommends the same plan for everyone doesn't take into account the extreme variance that we all have as individuals. For some, a low-carb diet can lead to a serotonin imbalance, or a fat-free diet can lead to a lack of nutrients needed for tissue repair. But this will be different for each individual. The truth is: there is no such thing as one diet that works for everyone. Because we are all unique, with specific body chemistry, specific genes, and different strengths and weaknesses, a personalized plan is the only plan that will lead to real personalized results," said Riemann.

User Tina Bernard, a teacher from San Diego, California, said "I've tried every diet out there over the past four years to try and lose the baby weight since the birth of my daughter. Nothing was working for me until I tried ph360.me. I've now lost 25 pounds in 3 months, easily, without feeling restricted or limited. All I needed to know was what was right for my specific body."
